Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008885
A strong, hot, and dry wind that blows across the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and the Middle East. It carries dense clouds of sand and dust, drastically reducing visibility and causing a rapid increase in temperature, sometimes exceeding 50°C (122°F). The name is derived from an Arabic word meaning "poison wind," reflecting its suffocating and intensely dehydrating effects on people and animals.
