Slab layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008927
A cohesive layer of snow that forms on top of a weaker, underlying snowpack, often due to wind deposition or temperature changes. This layer can fracture and slide as a single unit, leading to slab avalanches. The stability of a slab layer is influenced by its thickness, density, and the strength of the bond with the layers below it.
