Wind slab
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010265
A cohesive layer of stiff, dense snow formed by the deposition of wind-transported snow on leeward slopes or in sheltered areas. This layer sits atop a weaker, less cohesive snow layer, creating a shear plane. The presence of a wind slab over a weak layer is a primary factor in the formation of slab avalanches, which are responsible for most avalanche-related fatalities.
