Stiff system

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009257

A system of ordinary differential equations where some components of the solution decay much more rapidly than others, making numerical integration challenging. In atmospheric modeling, such systems often arise from chemical reactions with widely varying timescales. Special numerical methods are required to accurately and efficiently solve stiff systems without excessive computational cost.
