Split-explicit method

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009155

A numerical integration technique used in atmospheric models to efficiently solve prognostic equations by separating fast-moving atmospheric waves from slower, meteorologically relevant processes. This method applies different time steps to different terms in the equations, allowing for longer time steps for the slower processes while maintaining numerical stability for the faster ones. It reduces computational cost compared to fully explicit schemes, making it suitable for operational weather forecasting models.
