Streamer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009318
A thin, weakly luminous plasma channel that grows rapidly through air in a strong electric field by ionizing the gas ahead of its head, usually branching into a tree of filaments. Streamers precede and feed lightning leaders, and sprites high above thunderstorms are made of streamers. In air they advance at roughly 100 to 1000 kilometers per second.
