Vernier scale

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009992

An auxiliary scale used in conjunction with a main scale to increase the precision of a measurement, allowing for readings to a fraction of the smallest division on the main scale. It works by having divisions that are slightly different in size from those on the main scale, enabling a more accurate determination of the alignment point. Vernier scales are found on some meteorological instruments, such as barometers and rain gauges, for precise readings.
