Visual-range formula

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010045

A mathematical expression that relates the visual range, or visibility, to the atmospheric extinction coefficient. This formula quantifies how far an observer can see an object against the horizon sky, considering the scattering and absorption of light by atmospheric particles. It is derived from Koschmieder's law and is often used in aviation meteorology to determine flight conditions.
