Wave generation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010148

The process by which energy is transferred from wind to the ocean surface, creating waves. This transfer occurs through friction between the moving air and the water, with the efficiency of generation depending on wind speed, duration, and the distance over which the wind blows (fetch). The initial ripples grow into larger waves as more energy is imparted, eventually reaching a fully developed sea state.
