Wild fence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010239

A large, circular wind shield placed around a precipitation gauge to minimize the effect of wind on the accuracy of the measurement. It is constructed from a double row of large, freely hanging wooden laths or slats that disrupt airflow over the gauge's orifice, reducing the undercatch of solid precipitation like snow. The standard design specifies a fence with a diameter of 12 feet (about 3.6 meters) and laths that are 8 feet (about 2.4 meters) long.
