Asphaltene precipitation

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000198

The process by which asphaltene molecules, which are heavy, polar components of crude oil, aggregate and separate out as a solid phase. This destabilization occurs due to changes in pressure, temperature, or fluid composition, such as during gas injection for enhanced oil recovery or when mixing incompatible oils. The precipitated solids can deposit in the reservoir, wellbore, or surface facilities, causing plugging and flow restrictions.
