Asphaltenes
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000199
Heavy, polar molecular components of crude oil that are soluble in aromatic solvents but insoluble in alkanes. They exist as colloidal suspensions in crude oil and can precipitate due to changes in pressure, temperature, or composition, forming sludge or deposits that plug pores and restrict flow. Their precipitation can be a challenge in enhanced oil recovery processes, particularly during gas injection.
