Ball operated
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000263
Describing a downhole tool or device that is activated by dropping a spherical object, or ball, from the surface into the wellbore. The ball travels down the tubing string until it seats in a corresponding profile within the tool, creating a pressure seal that initiates a specific action. This method is commonly used for setting packers, opening or closing sleeves, and isolating zones during fracturing operations.
A downhole tool, such as a sliding sleeve, packer or frac port, that is actuated by a ball dropped or pumped from surface. The ball lands in a seat inside the tool and blocks flow, and pressure applied above it shifts a sleeve or sets the element. In multistage completions the seats are graded in size, and each ball is slightly larger than its own seat but small enough to pass every larger seat above it.
