Bias weld

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000331

A weld cut at an angle across the width of the flat steel strip that is formed into coiled tubing, joining one strip end to the next so the string can be made in one long length. Because the joint runs diagonally across the finished tube, no single ring of the pipe carries the whole weld, which spreads the stress along the tubing. A bias weld is made on flat strip before the tube is formed, whereas tube-to-tube butt welds join finished tubing.
