Caustic extraction test

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000596

A laboratory test on a barite sample to find out whether it contains sulfide or carbonate minerals that dissolve in caustic solution. Such minerals can release soluble sulfide or carbonate into a drilling fluid once the barite is mixed in, so the test screens a weighting material before it is used. The method was described in a 1981 Journal of Petroleum Technology paper by Binder, Carlton, and Garrett.
