Clastic intrusion

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000685

A body of sedimentary material that has been forced into pre-existing rock layers while still unconsolidated. These features form when overpressured, mobile sediment, such as water-saturated sand or mud, is injected into fractures or along bedding planes in the surrounding rock. Clastic intrusions, which include sandstone dikes and sills, are distinguished from igneous intrusions by their composition of fragmented rock and mineral grains.
