Common source
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000766
A method of acquiring seismic data where a single source location is used to generate seismic waves that are recorded by an array of receivers. The resulting collection of traces is known as a common source gather or shot record. This acquisition geometry contrasts with a common receiver gather, where multiple source points are recorded by a single receiver.
A seismic data acquisition and processing arrangement where all traces in a gather originate from the same energy source location. Each trace is recorded by a different receiver positioned at a unique offset from the source point, creating a fan of raypaths through the subsurface. This gathering method is distinct from common-midpoint (CMP) gathering, which groups traces that share the same subsurface reflection point rather than the same source.
