Depth mark

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001014

A magnetic mark placed on a wireline logging cable at regular intervals to serve as a reference for depth control. As each mark passes the surface detector it produces a pulse that is compared with the measuring-wheel reading, so slip and cable stretch show up and the depth is corrected. Marks are spaced at 100 feet or 25 meters in most systems, and some use 50 meters.
