Dilatancy
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001086
The phenomenon where the volume of a granular material, such as rock, increases when it is subjected to shear deformation. This occurs as grains rearrange and move apart, creating new pore space. Dilatancy can affect rock strength and permeability, and it is observed in laboratory experiments on rock mechanics.
