Dilatancy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003209
An increase in volume of a material as it is sheared, which usually accompanies shear thickening, the rise in viscosity with increasing shear rate. It occurs in concentrated suspensions of closely packed particles, such as cornstarch in water or wet sand, where shearing forces the particles apart and enlarges the voids between them. Older literature used the word for shear thickening itself.
