Shear rate

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013549

The rate at which a fluid is sheared or deformed, defined as the velocity gradient perpendicular to the direction of flow. In a bioreactor, it quantifies the intensity of mechanical agitation and fluid motion, which affects mass transfer and can impose stress on suspended cells or microorganisms. Shear rate is measured in reciprocal seconds (s⁻¹) and is a key parameter in scaling up bioprocesses from the laboratory to industrial production.
