Shear rate

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003360

The rate at which a fluid is deformed by shear stress, representing the velocity gradient across the fluid's flow path. In drilling fluids, it describes how quickly adjacent layers of fluid move past each other, influencing the fluid's viscosity and its ability to suspend solids. Shear rate is measured in reciprocal seconds (s⁻¹) and varies significantly within the drilling system, from high rates at the bit to low rates in the annulus.
