Shear stock
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003361
Calibrated rod or wire, typically brass, steel or other metals, from which shear pins are cut for wireline tools, setting tools and release devices. The shear strength of each size and material is known, so pins of a chosen diameter fail at a predictable load and let a tool release or activate. Wireline crews keep several diameters and metals on hand to set the release force in a toolstring.
