Extensive dilatancy anisotropy
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001358
A model describing seismic anisotropy caused by the preferred orientation of fluid-filled microcracks or pores within a rock, often induced by stress. This anisotropy affects the propagation of seismic waves, with different velocities depending on the direction of wave travel relative to the crack orientation. It is a mechanism proposed to explain observed shear-wave splitting in the Earth's crust.
