Anisotropy
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004228
The property of a material, such as a rock formation, having different values for a physical property when measured in different directions. In geophysics, seismic anisotropy means that the velocity of seismic waves depends on the direction of propagation and polarization. This directional variation is caused by factors like aligned mineral grains, microcracks, or fine-scale layering, and it contrasts with isotropy, where properties are uniform in all directions.
