Anisotropic formation

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004227

A subsurface rock layer in which a physical property, such as permeability or elastic modulus, has a different value when measured in different directions. In reservoir engineering, permeability anisotropy means fluid flows more easily in one direction (horizontally, along bedding planes) than another (vertically). This directional dependency affects well productivity, pressure transient behavior, and the shape of the drainage area, which is elliptical rather than circular.
