Expansion joint

A tubular device installed in a tubing string to compensate for changes in length due to thermal expansion or contraction, or to accommodate movement during well operations. It typically consists of telescoping sections that allow for axial movement. Expansion joints prevent buckling or tension failures in long tubing strings.
