A computer program that emulates the reasoning of a human specialist to solve problems within a specific domain. The system consists of a knowledge base of facts and rules, and an inference engine that applies these rules to user-provided data to reach a conclusion or recommendation. In drilling, an expert system might diagnose the cause of stuck pipe based on real-time surface and downhole measurements.
