Gibbs' phenomenon

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001700

The oscillatory behavior observed in the Fourier series approximation of a discontinuous function near the discontinuity. In seismic data processing, this phenomenon can manifest as artificial oscillations or ringing artifacts when sharp filters are applied in the frequency domain. It is a consequence of truncating the Fourier series.
