Ghost

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001699

A spurious reflection in seismic data caused by energy reflecting off the free surface (air-ground or air-water interface) after leaving the source or before arriving at the receiver. Source ghosts occur when energy travels upward from the source, reflects off the surface, and then travels downward. Receiver ghosts occur when upward-traveling energy reflects off the surface and then travels downward to the receiver.
