Greasing out
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001747
The separation of water-insoluble greasy material, such as an emulsifier, soap or lubricant, from a drilling fluid, seen as gummy lumps or an oily layer in the pits and at the shaker. It signals that an additive is incompatible with, or present in excess in, the mud, as when an emulsifier system breaks down in an oil-base mud. Greasing out is distinct from barite sag, which is settling of weight material rather than separation of an organic phase.
