Interval velocity

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002023

The speed at which a seismic wave travels through a specific layer of rock between two depth or time markers. It is calculated from seismic data using methods like the Dix equation, which relates interval velocity to the stacking velocities of reflections from the top and bottom of the layer. This velocity is a property of the rock formation itself and is influenced by lithology, porosity, and fluid content.
