Stacking velocity
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003580
The velocity that best flattens the hyperbolic moveout of a reflection on a common-midpoint gather, so that the traces add constructively when stacked. For horizontal layers and short offsets it approximates the root-mean-square velocity down to the reflector, and in the presence of dip it is larger than that by a factor of one over the cosine of the dip angle. Interval velocities are calculated from stacking velocities with the Dix equation.
