Magnetic toolface
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002259
The angle of a directional tool's toolface, measured clockwise from magnetic north in a plane cut across the hole. It is the steering reference in near-vertical holes, where inclination is below roughly 5 degrees and no usable high side exists, and it lets the driller point a bent sub or motor toward the planned azimuth. Above that inclination, surveys switch to gravity toolface referenced to the high side.
