Mechanical specific energy

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004379

The amount of mechanical work required to excavate a unit volume of rock during drilling. It is calculated from surface parameters including weight on bit, rotary speed, torque, and rate of penetration. The value is expressed in units of pressure, such as pounds per square inch (psi), and is compared to the rock's compressive strength to assess drilling efficiency.
