Penetration rate
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002729
The speed at which a drill bit breaks through rock, also known as the rate of penetration (ROP). It is measured as the distance drilled per unit of time, typically in feet per hour or meters per hour. ROP is a function of the rock type, bit design, weight on bit, rotary speed, and drilling fluid properties.
