MSE
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002440
A measure of the mechanical work done to excavate a unit volume of rock, calculated in real time to assess drilling performance. The calculation for Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) incorporates weight on bit, rotary speed, torque, bit diameter, and rate of penetration. An MSE value that closely matches the rock's unconfined compressive strength indicates efficient drilling, whereas a much higher value suggests energy is being wasted due to a worn bit or non-ideal parameters.
