  1. A computational model inspired by the structure and function of biological neural systems, capable of learning complex patterns from data. In reservoir characterization, neural networks are used for tasks such as predicting reservoir properties from well logs, identifying facies, or forecasting production. They can recognize non-linear relationships within large datasets.

  2. A class of machine learning algorithms inspired by the structure and function of the human brain, used to identify complex patterns and relationships within large datasets. These networks consist of interconnected nodes organized in layers, processing input data through a series of transformations. In reservoir characterization, they can predict reservoir properties from well log data or seismic attributes.
