Neutral point

The depth in a drill string or tubing string where the axial load changes from tension above to compression below, so the axial stress there is zero. Pipe above it carries the weight of the string hanging below, while pipe below it is compressed by set-down weight or pressure effects and is the part prone to buckling. Its position moves with fluid density, hole deviation, applied surface load and, for tubing, packer forces and temperature.
