Pozzolanic

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002891

Describing a siliceous or aluminous material that reacts with calcium hydroxide in the presence of water to form compounds possessing cementitious properties. In oil well cementing, pozzolans such as fly ash or silica fume are added to Portland cement slurries to create a more durable, less permeable, and chemically resistant set cement. This reaction consumes the soluble calcium hydroxide produced during cement hydration, which might otherwise be leached by formation waters.
