Slip joint
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003453
A telescoping joint at the top of a marine riser, made of an inner and an outer barrel, that lengthens and shortens as a floating rig heaves with the waves. Packer seals between the barrels keep drilling fluid inside the riser while the barrels move. A bottom-supported rig such as a jack-up does not heave and needs no slip joint.
