Surface casing

The first string of casing set in a well, cemented from the surface to a predetermined depth below fresh water zones. It provides structural integrity to the upper part of the wellbore, prevents contamination of shallow aquifers, and serves as an anchor for the blowout preventer stack. Surface casing depths are regulated by local environmental and safety standards.
