Uniformitarianism
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003989
The fundamental geological principle that the same natural laws and processes operating today have always operated in the past and apply everywhere. This concept, summarized as “the present is the key to the past,” allows geologists to interpret ancient rock formations by observing modern geological phenomena like erosion, sedimentation, and volcanic activity. The principle stands in contrast to catastrophism, which posits that Earth's features were shaped by sudden, short-lived, violent events.
