Fermat's principle
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001385
The physical law stating that a wave or ray traveling between two points will follow the path that takes the least amount of time. In seismic exploration, this principle governs how acoustic waves propagate through subsurface rock layers with varying velocities. It forms the basis for ray tracing algorithms used in seismic modeling and migration to determine the geometry of reflectors and the velocity structure of the earth.
