Water hammer
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004096
A pressure surge or shock wave caused by a sudden change in the velocity of fluid in a pipeline, typically when a valve is rapidly closed or a pump suddenly stops. This phenomenon can generate extremely high pressures, leading to pipe rupture, equipment damage, or noise. Surge tanks or slow-closing valves are used to mitigate water hammer effects.
