Slam retarder

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003441

A device incorporated into a check valve or other closing mechanism to slow down the closing action of the valve element. This controlled closure prevents sudden impact or 'slamming' that can cause water hammer, pressure surges, and damage to piping systems. Slam retarders are often hydraulic or pneumatic dampeners that absorb the closing energy.
