Retarder

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003136

A chemical additive mixed into cement slurry to delay the setting time, or the transition from a liquid to a solid state. This extended thickening time allows the slurry to be pumped to its required depth in the wellbore before it hardens, which is especially needed in deep, hot wells. Common retarders include lignosulfonates and organic acids, with the concentration adjusted for the specific bottomhole temperature.
