Retarder

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010283

A substance that lowers the rate of a reaction, chiefly in polymerization kinetics, where it slows chain growth by reacting with propagating radicals to give less reactive species. IUPAC treats it as synonymous with inhibitor. Polymer chemists often draw a distinction, in which an inhibitor produces a delay before polymerization starts and a retarder only slows the polymerization rate.
