Retardation factor

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010282

A dimensionless quantity in planar chromatography that expresses the migration of a solute relative to the movement of the mobile phase. It is calculated by dividing the distance the solute spot travels from the origin by the distance the solvent front travels from the same origin. The value of the retardation factor always lies between 0 and 1 and is characteristic for a given compound, stationary phase, and mobile phase combination.
