Solvent front
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011024
The front line of the eluent in planar chromatography, marking the farthest point the mobile phase has reached from the origin on the paper or thin layer. Its distance from the origin is the solvent migration distance. Dividing the distance travelled by a solute spot by the distance of the solvent front gives the retardation factor RF, a value between 0 and 1.
